BMR & HyperV Backups failing after OS Reinstall on DPM Server VSS Event 12289, Access Denied RRS feed

  • Question

  • I recently did a clean install of Server 2012 on my DPM server.  DPM is reinstalled, database restored, and some backups are working.  Unfortunately, I have several backups that are failing with VSS errors.  It looks like all of the affected backups are either of HyperV Guests or BMR backups.  DPM shows this error:

    Affected area:	Computer\System Protection
    Occurred since:	1/14/2013 7:42:13 PM
Description:	The replica of System Protection Computer\System Protection on SERVER.DOMAIN.com is inconsistent with the protected data source. All protection activities for data source will fail until the replica is synchronized with consistency check. You can recover data from existing recovery points, but new recovery points cannot be created until the replica is consistent.

For SharePoint farm, recovery points will continue getting created with the databases that are consistent. To backup inconsistent databases, run a consistency check on the farm. (ID 3106)
An unexpected error occurred on DPM server machine during a VSS operation. (ID 207 Details: VssError:The shadow copy provider had an error. Check the System and Application event logs for more information.
     (0x80042306))
    	More information
    Recommended action:	Retry the operation.
    	Synchronize with consistency check.
Run a synchronization job with consistency check...

Checking the event logs on the client, I don't see any errors, but on the DPM Server, I find this error:

Is this access denied error coming from the backup volume on the DPM server?  How can I correct this?

  • Oh, in addition to the Critical alert from DPM that I included in the OP, I also get this warning:

  • Trying to track down what's wrong here...  When listing shadow copies with vssadmin, I found some that had a path in the "windows.old" directory.  Browsing to the old ...DPM\Volumes directory, I found that all of the mount points were still there.  Checking disk management, I found that each dpm volume had 2 mount points associated with it, one under the "windows.old" tree and one under the current "Program Files" tree.  I removed all of the mount points under windows.old in hopes that the dual mount points might be causing the backups to fail, but it doesn't seem to have helped.

  • Brokendiet:

It looks like your reply went to the qa version of the forums, not the regular version.  I'll cross post my answer to both.

I believe what I ended up doing for this issue was removing all systems from the affected protection groups, creating new PG, and adding the systems to the new groups.
