Exchange 2010 high I/O on transaction log disk RRS feed

  • Question

  • Not sure if this is a normal thing with Exchange 2010, on our virtualized Mailbox server, I have a dedicated disk for transaction logs. I have 5 databases running on separated disks. Recently I discovered the Avg Physical Disk Read and Write rates are very high (over 80ms) on the log disk. According to this MS article:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997558(EXCHG.65).aspx The average value should below 10ms. Is this something normal with Exchange 2010?

  • Hi aha_tom,

Does the Avg Physical Disk Read and Write rates always keep as high as 80ms, Or just sometimes?
In my opinion, the Physical Disk Read and Write rates depends on the disk's perofmance, not due to the exchange 2010 and allow a long delay.
Does all the disk have the same issue?
Then we could narrow down the issue.

  • So do you have 5 databases on 5 different disks but the transaction logs for all of them are on the same disk?

If so, than that's your problem... Either use a faster disk, use RAID 10 for example, or use 5 separate disks for the transaction logs.
