disk thrashing RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hey,
I hope you guys can help me.  I have an HP Pavilion dv6000, with Vista 32bit installed.  The hard drive has started to thrash, mostly at start up and after you wake it up from sleep.  I am running AVG free, AntiVira, ad-aware, and the beta of Iobit security 360.  I have fun scans from all the male-ware software and while they have found some problems, it has not stopped the thrashing.  The virtual memory is set to automatically set its needs, but even when I change that the computer does not change performance.  My hard drive has been defraged and cleaned regularly an has bout 144 GB free out of 250 total.

Any Ideas how to fix this? If you need more info, let me know

  • look at cpu usage to see if it is indexing, or defragmenting. If it is defragmenting you can disable defrag for a time.
That's what I did (off for ten days and then reenabled). The disk was silent again.

  • no, I tried that ....and indexing is off.....and defrag is handled by smart defrag.......
