DR Architecture for SCCM 2012 - Two primary sites and a CAS? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

We are putting together a design for SCCM 2012 for a customer. They have two data centres in an Active (Primary) and Passive (Secondary) setup. They have about 5000 clients on 3 sites (separate from the Data Centres). AD has been extended from SCCM.

They would like to have site resilience for SCCM so that if the primary DC fails the SCCM clients will automatically fail over to the Secondary.

    • Is this achievable?
    • Would this be achieved by having a CAS server at the Primary or secondary DC and two primary site servers (one at each DC)?
    • Would anything need to be reconfigured on the server (such as the boundaries) should the primary DC fail?

This thread seems to recommend a single site with a backup and restore proceedure for DR.

That would mean to failover - have a standby server on DR site. In case of DR, remove the original site server from AD and rename the secondary server to the name of the original primary. Run the install on the secondary with the recover server option.

Failback would be eaxactly the same process on the Primary site. IE you would have to backup the secondary and recover to a new server in the primary DC.

    Seems very messy.

Anyone with any thoughts / pratical experience? Not sure I'm going to want to do a test failover / failback with this setup.

    Thanks very much.

    Geoff
