Sharing violations when saving to shared network Excel workbooks. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Good morning,

I have recently run into an issue with sharing violations when saving network shared Excel files. I get an error as follows

"The document was saved successfully, but Excel cannot re-open it because of a sharing violation. Please close the document and try to open it again"

I can save to non shared files no problem and if I copy the shared workbook to the local hard drive it saves no problem, but as soon as a file is shared on the network I get the error.  Many other computers and laptops access and save this Excel spreadsheet without an issue (with the same user logon) all running XP but this is the first Windows 7 machine to be introduced to the environment. I have searched high and low on the net for solutions but none seem to work.

I have disabled Windows Search, file caching, the details pane. I have uninstalled Symantec. Converted the file to various versions of Excel (original is Excel 97, has been converted to 2003, 2007, and 2010 formats. I have checked all permissions on the file and the folder it resides in. I even uninstalled Office 2010 and installed Office 2003 with the same results. Any ideas would be very much appreciated. I love Windows XP but lets face it, It's not going to be around forever and new hardware comes standard with Win 7 these days. I really need to make this work.

As a side note - When using Excel 2010 to open the Excel 97 file it asks for the password to be typed in 3 times?????? In my testing as soon as I converted it to 2010 it only asked once. I know this is a different issue but I thought I would bring it up in case anyone has run into this as well.

    Environment:

Network - Novell Open Enterprise Server 6.5 SP8

Windows 7 Professional 64bit (Fully updated)

    Novell Client 2 SP1 for Windows 7

Microsoft Office 2010 Home and Business

    Symantec Endpoint Protection v 11.0.5

Thanks in advance to anyone taking the time to read this.

  • Hello,

You are running on an older version, so this may or not be related. Please take a look at this KB that states a fix came in RU6 MP3 for File copies over SMB2 fail with Network Threat Protection installed/enabled - http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH139768

  • I appreciate the reply Thomas,

Unfortunately I don't believe this is the issue. My first attempt at troubleshooting whether it was AV or not, I disabled Symantec Endpoint Protection. My second attempt was deleting it from the system altogether. Neither solution made a difference. Thanks again for the advice though.

  • If the issue only occurs with excel, I suggest to contact Office Forum for further help, maybe they have some solution for this issue:
