Windows 8.1 to 8.1 Pro RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have purchased a laptop with Windows 8.1 pre-installed. I also purchased a Windows 8.1 Pro disc and license but every time I run a custom install it reverts back to the 8.1 Home edition with the OEM license and never allows me to install the 8.1 Pro edition with my new key.

Laptop is an Acer Aspire, E5-571

    Would appreciate any help

    Thanks

    LS

  • Hi,

I suggest you contact the vender where you buy the Windows 8.1 Pro disc and license to verify the key.

Actually, if you're already in Windows 8.1 standard, you just need to buy a Windows 8.1 Pro pack to get all the power in Windows 8.1 Pro.

Add: if the Windows 8.1 Pro disc is a OEM disk, then it should be bound to specific model of PC\motherboard.

  • Did you purchase an OEM version of Windows 8.1 Pro?  Unfortunately, only a "retail" Windows 8.1 Pro product key will work when using the Get more features with a new edition of Windows scenario.  Please see: Windows 8.1 Pro Pack

  • Comes up with the following:

"This key won't work. Check it and try again, or try a different key."

I have a genuine key so can't understand why i am seeing this but even so when i do a fresh installation, surely it should not be remembering the OEM key and reverting to Windows 8.1 Home edition, is this something on the Hard drive or on the PC itself?
