Upgrading from ADFS 2.0 to 3.0

    Question

  • Hello guys,

Would anyone share their experience upgrading ADFS 2.0 to 3.0?

    Few questions:

    1. Could I join the server to the domain with a different name and setup ADFS 3.0 and once everything is ready, change the name and IP to what it was on 2.0?

    2. Would I need to back up the Schema from the old ADFS 2.0?

    Thank you

  • Setup your ADFS 3.0 environment exactly the same as the ADFS 2.0.  Same Service Account, same name, etc.  Then you will export 2.0 and import into 3.0.

When you are sure it works via testing (probably using hosts files on a client machine) change the internal and external DNS Records to point to the 3.0 environment.

    Follow this guide.

Still more questions, asking in https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/ie/en-US/home?forum=ADFS  would yield better answers than the AD forum.

  • thank for your response.

I will be installing 3.0 to a different machine and will be server 2012.

It will be the same IP and server name.

is it possible for me to install 3.0 to another machine, setup everything and if am 100 sure that it will work, could i turn off the 2.0 and rename 3.0 to the same name as it was with 2.0? Please advise.

  • Hi,
Appreciate for posting in Directory services forum. Since the question is more regarding ADFS, I would suggest you post the questions in the ADFS forum:
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/home?forum=ADFS
The reason why we recommend posting appropriately is you will get the most qualified pool of respondents, and other partners who read the forums regularly can either share their knowledge or learn from your interaction.
    Best regards,
    Wendy
