renaming the hardware under a sharepoint web frontend machine RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a machine named srv99 that is running a MOSS 2007 farm called mysharepoint. This machine runs central admin, the sharepoint web front end and the ssp. The database is on sqlp0001\p001

I need to rename srv99 because of some work that is going on.

I know about stsadm -renameserver . The description, however, has mention of the SQL Server.

    1. Does the -renameserver refer to the farm name (in my case, mysharepoint), the server name (in my case, srv99) or the database server (sqlp0001)?

    2. If the renameserver operation refers to the actual server name, then after I run the renameserver, and I update the central admin > alternate access mappings, is there anything else that I will need to look at changing?

    Thank you!

  • Hi,

Renameserver command updates the name of the server in configuration database.

It refers to the server and in your case srv99. Once you change it other than AAM you may need to change your host file configuration entries based on your farm.

I hope this will help you out.
