DHCProot Object deleted

    Question

  • Hi All,

    Need some quick help.

DHCProot object is missing in the CN=Netservices container of AD 2016 version. However, DHCP authorization is working fine.. IS there any impact or how can i create it back.

We dont have backup of the environment.

  • Hi,

Have a nice day! Thanks for your question.

A DHCP server that is domain joined is authorized by a domain administrator in the AD DS. The authorization first checks to see if a "CN=DhcpRoot" object is present in the AD DS in the ADsPath.

If the object is not found, create it in the AD DS using the following:

    1) Object Relative Distinguished Name: CN= "DhcpRoot"

    2) Object Class:  "dHCPClass" (defined in the AD schema [MS-ADSC])

    MSDN article for your reference,

Authorizing a DHCP Server in Active Directory Domain Services

    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee916341.aspx

If delete the object CN=Dhcproot , it uncertainly affects to authorize DHCP, as we can see all our DHCP servers are listed separate in the right pane of CN=netservices as the CN=DhcpRoot itself.

But, if this object doesn’t exist, we may encounter the situation that it is unable to un-authorize DHCP such as we want to rename or change the DHCP server. That we couldn't delete old DHCP server from DHCP authorized list.

The following link is a blog discussed about it,

    https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/networking/2009/02/27/old-dhcp-servers-appear-in-the-list-of-authorized-servers-after-a-domain-rename/

Hope this helps. If you have any question and concern, please feel free to let me know.

    Best regards,

    Michael
