Preventing printing or downloading for documents with hyperlink in a list RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I have a custom list that has hyperlink column that includes links either to documents on the intranet in a document library or a document on file share (most probably these docs are Pdf files). We need to  prevent users from downloading these docs or even printing them, so Is there a way to do this as a type of control.

    Thank you in advance.

  • Hi Marwa,

In SharePoint, IRM protection is applied to files at the list or library level. When IRM is enabled for a library, rights management applies to all of the files in that library. When IRM is enabled for a list, rights management applies only to files that are attached to list items, not the actual list items.

So, if you want to prevent printing or downloading for the files which the links of list items are linked to, per my knowledge, you need to apply IRM for the files source(the library or file share).

    Best Regards,

    Wendy

All replies

  • check IRM - it may prevent users from printing the documents: Apply Information Rights Management to a list or library.

  • Hi,

    Thank you for the reply.

I checked the link provided for IRM but for list items , it was mentioned that the restriction will be applied only to the attachments in the list but my case is that I have hyperlinks for the Docs so it seems that the control has to be applied on the file share or on the library having the documents in.

Kindly correct me if I'm wrong or advise if you have any other solutions.

    Thanks.
