Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory. (Code 38) RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have been having an issue with my flash drive being recognized by my laptop computer. When I initially start up my computer, it reads my flash drive. If I take out my flash drive and reinsert it, it no longer reads it. (It still makes the sound the the computer recognizes it was inserted, but it won't open the drive.) When I go into device manger, it has that yellow exclamation point with this message, "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory. (Code 38)". My cordless mouse has been working just fine.

I did troubleshooting and it told me to restart the computer. That helps for the first time, but then when I reinsert the flash drive , the problem happens again.

I tried to uninstall the hubs and reinstall but that also doesn't seem to be helping.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

  • Hi bgatlas,

Firstly, I'd like to know what you did for troubleshooting? Please explain it concretely.

I don't know what you did, so sorry if the followings are what you did already.
    (1) Open Device Manager and DELETE USB controllers. (it will be found at next reboot)
    (2) Repair Windows XP: How To Fix Windows Xp Error 38

    Regards,

    P.S.
Windows XP has come to end of support in April, 2014. Windows XP has a weak spot to malware.
I recommend to use Windows 10.
