  • Question

  • I have two files (one a Word template, the other an Excel template) uploaded to a List. The files open fine as Read Only. When I go to save the file, the Save Dialog defaults to the Sharepoint folder that the template is in. Is there a way to change this? My users aren't inclined to think to save it to their laptops, which both of these files should be due to their nature and use.

    Hi David,

Why can’t you store your template in site content type?  When you save the file, then it will give you a dialog and will give you a location to save it. This is default, and it is difficult to change with out of box. So, I think if you have two template file which  these files are used more often, you can upload it as the document library template. You can refer to the following link.

There are a wide variety of Word and Excel templates that we use. These are just two of them. Currently, they're saved on our local server, but need to be in a location that they can be accessed by staff from other cities that do not have rights to our server. Additionally, the nature of the templates are such that they cannot be processed or routed electronically. My question was to solve the problem (or eliminate) the possibility of users saving a completed form to the SharePoint list where the template has been posted.

  • Can you not make the list read only?
