DPM 2012 - Item-level recovery (ILR) of Hyper-V virtual machines. Does ILR support SQL level restore? RRS feed

DPM supports item-level recovery (ILR), which allows you to do a specific recovery of files, folders, volumes, and virtual hard disks (VHDs) from a host-level backup of Hyper-V virtual machines to a network share or a volume on a DPM protected server.

I want to know whether DPM supports SQL level restore if a VM is running SQL server.

  • Hi,

Nothing prevents you from copying any set of files from the guest backup including SQL database files.  In theory, since a snapshot was taken in the guest to place the SQL databases in a consistent state, you should be able to copy them out and mount them.  With that said, I would run this by the SQL support guys in the SQL Server forum so you can get an official answer, then do some extensive testing.
