DPM 2012 - Backup Exchange 2013 (DAG) RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I have 4 server in Exchange 2013 farm configured DAG.

    I have 20 DB

In DAG configuration all DB is on each server, but only one is active.

when I want to backup those DB, what is the best option:

    1) create PG for every server and backup all DB on the server.

    or

    2) Create one PG and backup all DB in all servers.

or there is a better option?

    Thanks,

    LIOR

  • Hi,

Exchange VSS writer allows 8 parallel backups of exchange databases - however if you protect all 20 databases in a single protection group, DPM will serialize them.  It's best to use multiple protection groups and stager the backup times.  Use 8 protection groups with up to 3DB's in each if you want 8 parallel backups, or fewer PG's if you want fewer parallel backups.    No real need to protect more than one copy under normal circumstances. Just make sure they are all FULL backups so logs get truncated.

  • Hi,

how many PG you will use, depends mor on your configuration. if the Backup Interval and Retention range should be the same for all 20 DB's, best will be to create one PG.

If your are having enough space, backup active and passive DB as well, maybe there is a Case you Need the offline copy of a DB. If space is not enough, of course the active DB is enough to be backed up.
