SBS VSS backup and Monitoring problems RRS feed

  • Question

I have an SBS 2003 system with what appears to be a typical backup problem.

This is now getting stupit as we cannot backup the system and have resulted in using an XP system to backup files to its disk.

When atemting to backup 1 or more files to a backup file or tape we get this result from ntbackup...

Volume shadow copy creation: Attempt 1.
    Timeout before function completed

Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:0xffffffff.

Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:ffffffff
    Aborting Backup.

Oddly we can backup the exchange information store ok.

at the same time we get this in the application event log:

    VSS event 6013

Sqllib error: OLEDB Error encountered calling IDBInitialize::Initialize. hr = 0x80004005. SQLSTATE: 08001, Native Error: 18

    Error state: 1, Severity: 16

Source: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server

Error message: [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (SECDoClientHandshake()).]SSL Security error.

The server is SP2 and has had SBS sp1 reinstalled and Windows SP2 reinstalled

The listed hotfixes from MS will not install because it has been superceeded so will not install

    WindowsServer2003-KB891957-x86-ENU.exe and WindowsServer2003-KB833167-x86-ENU.EXE

We have used the suggested fix with no luck

    cd /d %windir%\system32
    Net stop vss
    Net stop swprv
    regsvr32 ole32.dll
    regsvr32 vss_ps.dll
    vssvc /register
    regsvr32 /i swprv.dll
    regsvr32 /i eventcls.dll
    regsvr32 es.dll
    regsvr32 stdprov.dll
    regsvr32 vssui.dll
    regsvr32 msxml.dll
    regsvr32 msxml3.dll
    regsvr32 msxml4.dll

In addition vssadmin list writers does not error and equaly does not display anything

shadow copies can be enabled or disabled in c and d volumes and is currently enabled on d volume.

Another clue might be that monitoring and reporting is not and will not configure.

It says it needs to be reinstalled but running the original sbs cd1 says its out of date because the system is a later ver...  so how do i reinstall these tools because reinstalling the service pack does not work.
