General DPM backup strategies RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi, hopefully someone will have an opinion regarding my scenario.

I have two sites in a single domain, linked via a 10 mbs VPN.  On each site I want to run a single server, with 4TB disk.  The servers are typical F&P, with AD and Exchange too.  I want to virtualise each server using HyperV.  So each site would have one physical and one virtual server.  My question is regarding backup strategy.  If I use <2TB at each site, then I could use DPM to replicate the data between sites.  However, is this sufficient, do people generally perform a D2T or D2(removable)D for offsite backup?  I'm interested in peoples' experiences please?  Host OS will be 2008 R2 (std or Ent - not sure yet).

  • Hi Ben,

If you install DPM on a DC then it can only protect local resources. In this scenario, Primary/Secondary DPM protection isn't possible ("TB at each site, then I could use DPM to replicate the data between sites.")
