  • Yes you can use it.

The problems are not easy to specify. It's usually better to use the same year version of Office with the same year version of SP because the applications were developed at the same time.

Downwards (later SP than Office) is easier because then that  Office version was known about when SP was being developed. Usually it just means that you get no additional functions with that (older) version of Office + the newer version of SP than with that (older) version of Office and the same (older) version of SP.

Upwards though is a slightly different situation. The newer Office version (here Office 2010) was not known about when the older version of SP (here MOSS 2007) was being developed. So while new functions of Office are there, the earlier version of SP can't take advantage of them. Sometimes functions were developed in that new version of Office without the Office team considering their effect on the then actual (i.e. earlier) version of SP. Hence the fact that there sometimes are problems.

I hope this helps. MS will almost certainly over time bring out KB articles that outline the areas in Office 2010 that MOSS 2007 has problems with. This will happen when enough customers report problems.
