BPA report missing VSS RRS feed

  • Question

  • Running CentOS 6.3 on hyper-v 2012, with integration services 6.4

BPA reports the VSS integration is not operating correctly. I know that VSS is a Windows Service, so maybe integration services for linux haven't any similar feature. However, is this normal? May I stop hyper-v to offer VSS to the VM?

One or more integration services are disabled or not working in a virtual machine.

The service or integration feature may not operate correctly for the following virtual machines:

Use the Services snap-in or sc config command-line tool to verify that the service is configured to start automatically and is not stopped.

  • Nope, VSS is not supported with Linux guest.

Possibly when using a FS like BTRFS or the have your FS on a LVM partition which does some sort of snapshotting then there could be a possible integration - but as Linux has different distributions doing things a little different until now I don't know of any integration possibility with Hyper-V VSS.

A difference I know about making a difference is when doing VSS-based Backups (be it via Scripts, Windows Backup or even external applications like Backup Exec)

    • A VM not supporting VSS will be paused (saved) during a VSS snapshot and after that be restarted.
    • A VM supporting VSS will be notified to prepare for a sbapshot and remain up and running during VSS snapshot.

  • so is it better if I sto hyper-v to offer VSS, or it's the same?
