Installation Failure RRS feed

  • Question

  • I was unable to install Vista as an upgrade over XP.  Initially it seemed to go OK with a few pauses (had to use Convert to change FAT 32 to NTFS; made me remove Norton AV).  It went thru copying and expanding files and went up to  Completing Upgrade.  It then rebooted a few times and stayed at Completing Upgrade for over 30 minutes, but there was HD activity so I waited it out.  Finally, the HD activity ceased for over 15 minutes.  I then did the usual power-down, expecting it to resume Setup on reboot.  Instead I got the Vista screen stating that the upgrade had failed and my previous OS was being restored.  There was no explanation of why the installation failed.   XP was restored with no problems.  Anyone have this same problem or ideas as to what happened?

  • Disregard.  Since upgrade failed, did a clean install on a new HD and set up dual boot.  Now Vista and XP work fine together, except for the usual glitches with IE and network in Vista.
