windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. you may not have the appropriate permission to access the item RRS feed

  • Question

  • Recent changes:

We recently removed 5 out of 6 total 2008R2 DCs from our environment and promoted 5 x 2016 servers as DCs.  We are still running the domain functional level @ 2008R2 however.

    Single forest 2 domain environment

Shortly have recent changes (stated above) the issue started with 5 users in parent domain.  After existing user logs in applications like  windows explorer, internet explore, will error with  "windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. you may not have the appropriate permission to access the item".  Also, other applications will not run as they are attempting to resister OCX file and DLLs.  cannot access computer management even after granting affected user local admin rights.  This issue has now transcended to child domain and is affecting at the moment only 1 existing user.

Unaffected users are able to login to same test computer and run applications without issue.

Clearly a domain permission problem with the user account, but not sure how to proceed.

For testing I gave affected users domain admin rights and the issue goes away.  Remove domain admin rights and the issue returns for the user.

    Any ideas?
