Join Existing Primary to Existing CAS RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello, hopefully someone here or maybe Wally himself can confirm this or not.

    Background:

I know with 2012 SP1 there is now the ability to have an existing Primary site and then add a CAS to it, at the time the CAS is first installed. From my understanding you can only do this for one primary and only at the time when the CAS is installed. This is because, again from my understanding it uses the Primaries database as a framework for the CAS when its installed. (Please correct me if I'm wrong here)

Now I know all the reasons why not to use a CAS. But we have a real need for one as there are multiple AD Forests with no trusts, and several other reasoning behind the decision.  So I do not need to discuss this point further. I do understand that in 99.9% of the times you do not need a CAS. But this is not the case here.

    My question is:

Someone told me a rumor that with R2 you will be able to add multiple existing primaries to an existing CAS. I am not sure if this is or would ever be possible, given the way that in SP1 adding a CAS to one existing primary works. But I need to ask the question. As Globally we already have 2 primaries and want to collapse them into one hierarchy without having to reinstall a primary and do a side by side migration under a new CAS hierarchy .

So if anyone with detailed knowledge can confirm that with R2 this is false, true, or even possible.

    Thanks!

That is not a reason, in fact, you specifically cannot do this without a trust.

The rumor at the bottom of your post is just a rumor and is not within anything I've seen in R2 and I doubt that it is technically possible based on the same logic as you've cited..

  • I was in a class with Wally this morning. I asked if we would support adding multiple primary sites into a CAS, but there is no current plans it's a one time deal for a single primary to join a CAS. You can use migration to migrate content from another primary once you do join a Primary to a CAS.

    - We don't support installing a Primary site in an untrusted domain (Only site system roles like MP, DP, SUP etc.). I'm not sure if you are saying you need to install multiple primaries in order to use multiple network accounts so machines in the untrusted forest and access resources from a DP's in multiple domains for example. If that's what you are referring to as a reason you may need multiple sites to manage machines in multiple untrusted forest then that may make sense. In ConfigMgr 2012 R2, you will be able to specify multiple network access accounts so this would eliminate the need for multiple primaries to support clients.
