Cannot remove user (user is not in the hidden user list or AD, but is in people picker)

    Question

  • User is not in Active directory

User is not in the hidden user list: /_Layouts/15/People.aspx?MembershipGroupid=0

I have removed the user from the root of every site using Remove-spuser with the username i:0#.w|contoso\Joe.blow and also performed the same without the i:0#.w| in front.

I have removed the user profile from within Central Admin, in the User Profile manager “Manage User Profiles”

After doing all the above, I’ve run every timer job in the farm to do any necessary cleanup.

Then, when I enter the name into a SharePoint people picker (like to add someone to a group) I see the old user still there.

I've tried every solution I can locate here and out on the general web...nothing is working.  Any help would be appreciated

  • As far as i''m concerned, UPS and people picker are not related. People picker queries directly to AD. Could be you are looking at a cached people picker result. http://wp.ahcheng.com/2015/07/14/how-to-clear-sharepoint-people-picker-suggestion-cache/ Could you use another browser? Also do you have multiple authentication provider? Could Also be the source.

  • After removing the user from AD and User Profiles did you run a Full User Profile Sync?

  • Yes several times, as well as a partial.  I forgot to include that I had done that...thanks for pointing it out.

  • Hi csedwilliams,

Please clear the configuration cache and perform an IISREST on the server to get all the SharePoint servers up to date on the latest farm information, check if the issue is resolved.

Information about how to clear SharePoint configuration cache. Though the article is for SHarePoint 2010, it also fits for SharePoint 2013.

    https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/jamesway/2011/05/23/sharepoint-2010-clearing-the-configuration-cache/

Meanwhile, clear the browser cache and re-start the browser to see if the issue persists.

    Best Regards,

    Linda Zhang
