Insufficient permissions RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am trying to set up a test Exchange 2010 server (running under Windows 2008 Server R2).  I have got Exchange server installed and am able to create mailboxes and send messages back and forth.  Now I want to experiment with setting up mailbox archives and have a problem.  Every time I go into EMC and try to do the steps I see documented, I do not have the required permission.  I click on Organization Configuration and it says I do not have sufficient permission to view the information.  Same thing if I click on a user mailbox.  Every item has the "lock" icon next to it.  I am logged in as the system administrator - I should have full privs. What am I doing wrong?

  • Well I think I have gotten past my permission issue by deleting all the saved credentials in the credential manager.  I have now created an archive and configured a user so that it is pointed at this archive and archiving is enabled.  Everything looks good in EMC.  However I see no sign of an archive when I run Outlook and connect to this user.  I have created a new profile for him after the archive was enabled.  All I see are my default folders.  There does not seem to be any option to move a message into the archive.  What am I missing?

What version of Outlook are you using?
Not all of them has support for the Exchange Personal/Online Archive (see link below). Can you see it in OWA?

  • What Exchange Permissions do you have?

Im thinking that you are only a member of "View-Only Organization Management" and not "Organization Management" or "Recipient Management", cause that would explain the lock icon.

  • Are you member of Mailbox Import-Export Management Role Group ?

    If not then run command

    Add-RoleGroupMember <role group name> -Member <member>

  • Make sure your user account in AD has the Organization Management security group

  • Yes, use OWA to check whether archive is working.

Here is one related document about clients that support the Exchange 2010 personal archive

  • Yes you are correct - I was able to get it working by installing Outlook from Office Professional Plus instead of my old standard version.
