SharePoint Online Limits for Number of Subsites and Workflows

    Question

  • Hi All,

Current SPO documentation indicates that the maximum number of subsites within a site (Site collection) is 2000.

However the total number of permissible workflows within a site 1000.

If one has a hierarchical structure of sub-sites going down to a fourth layer and if a workflow is required per sub-site then one is limited to 1000 sub-sites.

    Please indicate if:

    - this understanding of current limitaions is correct

    - or if the limitations of a site on SPO have increased (as a cloud environment hopefully SPO would have good scalability)

    - or if there are recommended alternatives to overcome the above limitations.

    With Thanks

  • Hi,

Yes, the maximum supported number of published workflow definitions per web site is 1,000.

It’s not supported to increase this limitations in SharePoint online. You need to make a good plan when you try to create SP sites.

The limitation values put in place are recommended based on Microsoft testing. If you don’t configure site structure as recommended, performance could become an issue.

    Thanks,
