DPM 2016. No changes are made to client data RRS feed

  • Good day.
    DPM 2016 CU5. A protection group is created in which the client is added and the location of the folder with the outlook mail databases is specified.
    It is configured to synchronize once every 24 hours and create a restore point three times a week, the storage range is 14 days.
    When passing the first consistency check, data in the amount of protected data (6 with a small gigabyte) was transferred. A recovery point is created by schedule.
    In the RECOVERY section, I see that the recovery point for the specified time of its creation contains data about the files at the time of the first synchronization. OK.
    Then regularly, once a day, synchronization occurs. In the MONITORING section, I see that data in the amount of 0.13 MB is transmitted (always the same amount!).
    Next, in a schedule, a Recovery Point is created. And here the interesting begins.
    In the RECOVERY section, I see that the recovery point for the specified time of its creation contains data about the files, again at the time of the first synchronization. No data changes.
    And this is on 5 clients out of 7. Altered several times, nothing changes. Versions of OS on clients different and 10, and 7.
    I am at a loss.

    I apologize if I haven't understood you correctly, is the problem that you are not seeing any change in the size of the data being protected by DPM?

    Could you provide screenshots of this?

    This doesn't have to be a problem, what you are seeing is the Synchronization which is a process by DPM that transfers the changed data from a protected computer to the DPM server and then applies the changes to the replica of the protected data.

    If there is no change in the data then the Synchronization will return "0,13 MB".

    DPM relies on the synchronization to keep the replicas synchronized with the data on the protected computers.

    The synchronization frequency interval can be anywhere from every 15 min to 24 hours.

    Could you provide a screenshot from completed jobs of one (1) specific protected item, just so that we can see how DPM has been dealing with this?

    In the period under review, changes in the data are exactly taking place. This is my pc.
    If I restore the file from the restore point on November 7, 14:56, then its content will meet its modification date, in this case, the mail is only for November 6, at 13:31. Thus, despite the synchronization and recovery points, the data will be only at the time of the consistency check.
    All screenshots refer to the same protected item.

  • You mention that this is a mailbox, what kind of file is it?
    It appears that DPM is not transferring or catching the changes during the synchronization but only during consistency checks.

    A Synchronization only brings over changed blocked between sync times, it has no knowledge of any blocks that may be different in blocks it's not transferring.

    A Consistency Check checks every file in a 2 steps process, a lightweight comparison of file metadata to see what files may be different, then a heavyweight comparison of the files data to correct differences.

    Yes, I came to the same conclusion. The question remains, how to fix it?

    Protection is configured on the folder with Microsoft Outkook files.
    The screenshots show a list.
    Checking the content after recovery, was carried out on the file nataly.belous@*****.pst

  • It is rare to see backup of single .pst files as in general there is a backup of a whole Exchange database/environment.

    Could this explain something maybe?

  • Unfortunately not.
    I’ll be quite satisfied if the entire pst files are transferred each time, as described in the article, since the mail server cannot be protected in my case.
    And the task is precisely to protect user data, including outlook mail databases.
    But this does not happen, on 5 clients out of 7.
    I will check on other files, not pst, and report the result.

    I checked the %userprofile%\documents\TestDPMBackup folder protection, where I put several .pptx and .docx files. File changes are correctly displayed synchronization and recovery points.

  • Clients have their own Data Protection Manager Client installed, you can backup & restore from there.

    Have you tried performing both backups & restores from within the Data Protection Manager Client on a client?

    When creating protection groups, the flag was removed from the parameter:
          - Allow user to specify protection group members
    Users are not planning to issue such rights.

  • You mentioned earlier that this happens to 5 out of 7 clients, which means that the backup does work but only for some clients, so let's try to narrow down the possibilities by finding similarities and differences in these clients.

    To start with we could check the following:

    • Client operating system version
    • Time of the backup
    • Is Outlook being used or not during backup
    • Is encryption enabled or disabled

  • So this is happening to both Windows 7 and Windows 10 clients?

    Is this happening to a "specific" .pst file for a user?

    Also if you compare inside a mailbox of a user that is working and a user's mailbox that isn't working, what are the differences?
