Taskbar icon disappears when right clicking RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

at the moment I am struggling with deploying sequenced applications on Windows 2008R2 XenApp 6.5 Terminalservers. We are using App-V Sequencer/ Client App-V 5.0 SP2 HF4 with the App-V management server.

We have sequenced around about 10 app-v applications. The applications are working fine except one specific problem:

If anyone is right clicking the opened application on the Windows taskbar, the icon of the application is disappearing and turns into a completely white icon. This problem occurs, if we start directly the executable from the Windows Explorer or creating an manual shortcut. The problem occurs with all 10 deployed applications.

If I enable shortcuts on the App-V servers, the problem is solved for the most applications. So if I start the application by clicking on the published icon in the start menu, the icon stays with an right click.
If I have enabled the shortcuts on the App-V server, I can also open the exe-file in the Windows Explorer and it works all fine.

Additional I have several applications, where the problem occurs, even if I have enabled the shortcuts.
I sequenced the applications several times (also with no exculsions or deleting anything in the package), I think its an general, not an sequencing, problem.

Does anyone has an idea about this strange behaviour?

    Thanks for your help.
    Tobias

  • Hello,

What happens if you deploy the client and the package to Windows 7?

What happens if you remove all other software from the server (such as UPM), and all GPOs and then try the application?

  • I'm on a machine right now with a Sequenced Skype and Sequenced Office. An Outlook icon is in the taskbar, ditto Skype. I can right click without issue. Are you using the default configuration when publishing the applications or a custom?

Did you remove or exclude certain directories from the package e.g. Windows\Installer?

I honestly can't give you an answer as I haven't seen this behavior myself. Are you using anything like RES WorkSpace Manager or AppSense?...sometimes those can interfere with shortcuts

  • Hello,

You have quite a few layers involved here...

    1. If you have the 2008 R2 Server with RDS enabled - NO XENAPP

    Does the issue occur?

    2. If you install Xenapp and logon using RDP, does the issue occur?

    3. If you logon to the desktop using Xenapp, does the issue occur?

  • Hi,

    thanks for your answers.

@Rorymon: I'm using the default configuration. I have not deleted any folders while sequencing the application. We are using Citrix Profilmanagement in the newest version, no RES/ AppSense. This version supports App-V. I also tried it with normal windows profiles --> same result.

    @Nicke Källén: I tried 1-3 --> same result

    Thanks for your help!

  • I hope you guys don't mind for kicking an old topic, but I'm dealing with the same issue.

Environment is Citrix VDI with Windows 7 x64 client, AppSense, AppV 5.0 SP3.

In the original situation the shortcuts were disabled in the VAS and the LNK files are distributed through AppSense. This results in white icons on the taskbar when right-clicking on them. We've learned that this issue doesn't appear when enabling the shortcuts in the VAS and putting them on the desktop. However, the shortcuts need to be distributed with AppSense, so we tried to place the shortcuts on a local folder, where the user has no acces to them.

We've chosen [{local appdata}]\temp, but this didn't solve the problem. Our first thought was because that location isn't default in the drop-down list, we needed to take a default value from the drop-down list and choose [{Appdata}]\shortcuts. This too didn't solve the issue. So we now have the situation that the only way to have the desired state (correct icon stays in taskbar when right-clicking on it) when we publish the shortcuts to the desktop.

We can try and work-around this issue to remove the shortcuts with AppSense afterwards, but this seems a weird way to get the desired situation.

Any thoughts / test idea's would be appreciated.

    Kind regards,

    Tom
