can DPM 2012 back up Windows Server 2012 (with deduplication)? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Now that we are transitioning all our file servers to Windows Server 2012 and taking advantage of deduplication, I installed the dpm 2012 agent on one of our file servers and created a protection group.  There is about 250 GB of data to back up (deduplicated down to around 150 GB) but DPM only transferred about 2 GB worth and then stopped, and the protection group shows green.  When I go to recovery and look at the contents, a ton of the files there are listed as 0 KB.

Assuming this has something to do with either 2012 or deduplication or both, when will there be full support for 2012 and deduped volumes?

    Thanks,

    Wes

  • I've seen variations of this question several times, but haven't found an answer yet.  I'm also trying to find out if dpm can backup server 2012 yet, although in my case we're using dpm 2010.  I've not seen a firm yes or no, but just suggestions that it will support it under dpm2012 sp1.

Right now, I'm trying to restore some files that were backed up from a 2008R2 server to a 2012 server, and the recovery keeps failing.  I don't know if it's because of the os on the destination server or if there's something else going on.

DPM 2012 SP1 CTP2 can backup Windows Server 2012 RC with deduplication enabled on the source filesystem , this is not for production

DPM 2010 is not supported or working with Windows Server 2012

As DareDevil says Windows 2012 will be fully supported at service pack 1 timeframe for DPM

  • So, DPM2012, without SP1, will not work with Server 2012 RTM?

Will DPM 2010 be updated to support backing up Server 2012 at some point?

DPM 2012 SP1 RTM is required to protect Server 2012 RTM

i cant speak for Microsoft but my guess would be that DPM 2010 wont be updated but its just a guess from my point of view.
