MAP Installation Error RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I'm trying to install Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit 5.0, but keep getting installation errors during the MS SQL Express 2008 R2 installation. I've tried letting the MAP setup download and install SQL express for itself, then I tried downloading the latest SQL express, and pointing setup to the SQL express setup .exe file, and also installing SQL express myself first, then running MAP setup. However, each time it fails. I'm running Windows 7 ultimate, with all the latest security patches, and Office 2007 standard, logged on as an administrator.

The error code I'm getting is: "The Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit Setup Wizard failed while installing SQL Server Express Edition
    Unknown error (0x84bb0001)"

\the last lines of MAPSASetup.log have the following at the end:

       |Location of error report:
       |   at VRASetup.ProcessExecutor.RaiseFailureEvent(String message, Process process)

    <2011-01-01 22:41:27.21 TID-1@WindowsWizard,I> Activate Page completed

Detail.txt of the SQL installation logs has a few errors:

2011-01-01 22:18:19 Slp: Skipping Action: FinalizePreUpgradeAction
2011-01-01 22:18:19 Slp: Action is being skipped due to the following restrictions:

2011-01-01 22:18:26 Slp: Condition "Is the user's scenario set to EditionUpgrade" did not pass as it returned false and true was expected.

How can I get this installed? I'm not sure what the problem is! SQL Express seems to install OK when I install it manually, but it seems to be during the new instance creation that causes it to fail, but I'm unsure where/how!

Any help would be much appreciated!

    Ben

  • The easiest thing to do in this scenario is to remove MAP from the installation scenario and let SQL do it's thing standalone. This may surface a more helpful error message. Follow the instructions here to install SQL Express: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/manually-installing-sql-server-for-use-with-map-toolkit.aspx Hopefully you'll get a more detailed error message at which point you can follow up with the SQL team for help.
