File size sudden increase RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

We have recently had an issue with our microsoft project2010 files in that litteraly from one day to the next, the size of 32 sub projects in a master project each increased in size by average from 350 kb upto 10500kb!! the cause was addition of litteraly hundreds (maybe even thousands, i got bored of counting) of calendars appearing on each project. Most of them labeled as baseline calendars. We have only basedlined 5 of the 32 subprojects and the baselines were the complete project not seperate activities.

So two questions to ask on this.

Anyone have any ideas what we did to make all these calendars tag onto our projects?

Does each baseline create its own calendar? (i initially thought not as i had experimented before by baselining projects then checking the projects calendars to see if there was now an extra calendar for the baseline which there was not)

    Regards

    Steve

  • Hi Steve,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project forum:-)

I don't know why this happens, but firstly make sure you have SP1 installed.  Then, as I suspect a corrupt file, you could try the suggestions in FAQ Item: 43. Handling project file corruption and/or bloat.

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :-)

  • Hi Glen,

Thanks for your answer, yes we have all installed service pack 1 & all the hotfixes too. I am currently using step 4 of item 43 on the FAQ, does this method ensure the files are now in theory a brand new 2010 file even if they were previously created as 2007 & 2003 files then saved as 2010?

It seems to be working so far although its very slow progress due to the files taking so long to open for me to change them, i will let you know if this is succesful when i have completed all files.

Also it seems that linked files i.e. resource pool & project files pass calendars over to one another when opened and saved, is this correct? If so i imagine there was one problem file that was added to our master plan contianing all the calendars which was spread to other files through the linked resource pool. I imagine we will never understand how that one file became so full of calendars in the first place but we would be a step closer to understanding how we got to this stage.

    Regards Steve

  • Hi Glen,

Finally finished, all seems fine now.

    Thanks

    Steve

The question still stands regarding are the files now 100% 2010 creations?

  • Hi Steve,

Thanks for the feedback - I'm glad you've succeeded!

I'm no expert on the innards of Project but I would expect the method you used will have created a native 2010 format, though I'm willing to stand corrected by the experts.

  • Ok thanks again glen,

If there is anyone out there who can give me a definative answer it would be appreciated as i would like to know that i have removed all previous version files from our plans. We are still having some issues so would be nice to tick this off as not being one of them & then move onto the next problem.

Why oh why is project so fragile!!!

    Regards Steve
