Exchange 2010 Message Size Limit RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I've been asked to apply message size limits to our Exchange infrastructure, limits have been set at 100mb incoming and 10mb outgoing.

Thought this was simple by running in the EMS -> Set-TransportConfig -MaxReceiveSize 100MB -MaxSendSize 10MB

But when I do this I get an NDR when testing of -> "#550 5.2.3 RESOLVER.RST.SendSizeLimit.Org; message too large for this organization ##" the NDR indicates the limit is 10mb, when I remove the send limit the messages get through without an issue.

The Exchange infrastructure is all roll separated, so we have a separate server for each CAS, HUB and MBX servers.

If someone could point out what I'm doing wrong...

    Thanks

    Michael.

  • Here is a great link that explains all the different places to apply message size limits depending on what you are trying to achieve:

  • Thanks for the link, was meant to say the NDR is from an external source "Hotmail" I thought by setting the MaxReceiveSize 100MB would allow me to receive mail up to this size.

  • I think hotmail has a 10MB (send and recieve) limit...could be wrong.  It is definitely not 100MB

  • Hotmail has a 25mb limit the NDR was being generated from my HUB server.

Been through this http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124345.aspx it's a little annoying that there isn't a difference between mailboxes and servers at the organisation level, as the limit that we are trying to impose is on the mailboxes and not the servers, I know I can apply a limit on the individual mailboxes and have done this at the moment, but by applying the limit at the mailbox level still allows the user to send the item (Ok you get an 'Undeliverable' message) but the item is still written to the users sent items, whereas if the limit as at the organisation level you can not even send the item.
