Backup and Restore History RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi, I have made on one server a backup of a site, stored it on my backup USB Harddisk. now want to restore it on a new server via Central Administration -> Restore from Backup - Setp 1 of 3: Select Backup to Restore

    I point to the path where my backup is stored (site1.bak), however even after pressing "refresh" I still get "No backup history was found. Choose a different directory path"

    How can I best restore the entire site? I have taken down the old server. Have a backup of the content database but best would be via backup/restore in my mind.

    Kind regards

    Hi Gianni,

    If your file is *.bak type, I suggest you to restore it by command of STSADM.

    1. Click Strat->Run->input  cmd .
    2. Input     cd  C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\BIN,  enter this path.
    3. Input   stsadm -o restore -url http://jack-7716f30e37:2012/personal/Test/ -filename Mytest.bak

    You can refer to the following link.

    Thanks,

    Jack

    Hi Gianni ,

    If the location of the backup has changed from the default location you will need to open up the spbrtoc.xml file and change the <SPBackupDirectory> value to what your new location is. Please change the backup path to your USB hard disk path.

    <SPBackupDirectory>C:\mybackup\spbr0000\</SPBackupDirectory>

    Thanks,

    Jack

  • Hi Jack, thanks a lot for the answer.

    I am not sure if I gave the correct input, I have a File with a *.bak extension, how can I get access to the spbrtoc.xml file? I tried to unzip it, but I have just a blank mind how to get into the *.bak file (tried to google it but just does not pop into my mind right now)

    Greetings - Gianni

  • Hi Jack

    I did this, I got the follownig (did it on 14\bin, also tried with the powershell restore-spsite cmdlet...

    )

    Restore-SPSite : Your backup is from a different version of Microsoft SharePoin
    t Foundation and cannot be restored to a server running the current version. Th
    e backup file should be restored to a server with version '14.0.0.4762' or late
    r.

    From Googling about this it seems that I have Service Pack 1 on the new server but not so on the new one, or is it vice versa, then I could update to SP1 SharePoint. Is there any chance to still restore my old stuff or is it completely "lost"?

    thanks once again for your help

    kind regards - Gianni
