SCSM Console - No auto refresh, seriously?

    Question

  • This is probably not a question as i'm about 100% sure that this is not possible, but wanted to start a discussion on it any. From what i know the console does not auto refresh work items as this may have a big impact on operators that experience high volumes of requests.

    To me this does not make sense, as even Ops Manager auto refreshes, and that goes nuts some days. But i wouldn't want to live without that. Also, you could add auto refresh and be able to configure the rate of refresh, or even disable it if it causes an issue. Maybe even put flags on the work item view name so you know there's new items, and you need to refresh.

    So we're relegated to the F5 key, and reliant on email notifications, to make sure our analysts don't miss a ticket.

    I just wondered... Am i the only one who finds this frustrating?

  • I can't fathom why anybody would create a ticketing system without an auto refresh?  I started a new job the other day and they were using SCSM for tickets and no auto refresh was unacceptable to me.  I made this simple autohotkey script so It will refresh every 30 seconds for me.  Basically it just detects if service manager console is the active window, and if it is, it sends the F5 key every 30 seconds (And F5 refreshes in SCSM).  When you're not using the window, the script does nothing and when you return to it, it will refresh right away.

    Loop
    {
    IfWinActive, Service Manager Console
    {
    Send {F5}
    sleep 30000
    }
    }

    Simply download and install (http://www.autohotkey.com/).  Then make a new text file and paste the above code in it. Rename the text file to have a .ahk extension and run it.  Don't forget to change the 30000 in the code to the refresh time you desire.  It is in milliseconds, so 30000 is 30 seconds.  You can also compile it easily into a .exe with autohotkey and then run it on computers that do not have autohotkey installed.

    This should be a temp fix until Microsoft actually programs this functionality into their software.

  • Hi Anton,

    Thanks for the link I couldn't see any suggestions for this so I have created a new feedback item.

    Strange as i thought this kind of functionality would be standard, so am a little stumped to why it has even been suggested. I have seen a thread dated back in 2010 that mentions it may get built into SCSM 2010 R2, it was on the list... but that was 2 years ago... http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/systemcenterservicemanager/thread/6fad5868-3e54-42c6-bfec-6327cf9d7f65

    Hope this helps

  • I'm not finding any results when I search for that ID number.  Can you please provide a link to your suggestion - or offer any solution to this?  I'm also shocked this isn't included out of the box.

  • Thanks Anton, i was not aware of this, and it looks like it solves the issue. Although unfortunately it's at an additional cost and currently not available.

    As for the connect feedback you can find and vote for the suggested auto-refresh feedback here, to see if this feature can be built into SCSM as it should be.

  • Hi Andrew, I have the same problem as you but in SCSM 2012 sp1 version, any suggestions please.

  • Sorry Pepadin, haven't got to installing SP1 yet, but sounds as though it wasn't added. Bad news :-(

    The only thing I can suggest is to look at some of the analyst web portals that have come out, as I believe some of the them do auto-refresh. We've looked at Grid-Pro and Cireson. Cireson's looked really good in HTML 5, but limited to incidents for the moment.

  • We have Cireson's Analyst Web Console installed, but it also doesn't support auto-refresh with the browser.  I submitted it to them as a feature request and it sounds like it will be coming soon in a future version.

    There is a third-party management pack (Advanced View Editor) which does have support for auto-refresh of views.  The interval can be configured (default is 30 seconds) and it will display a banner above the column headers of any view alerting the user that the contents have changed and to click to refresh the view.  It won't automatically refresh for you.
