Installing distribution server role on WSUS server fails with program exception error RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

trying to install the distribution server role only on our existing WSUS server (2008 Standard 32bit) fails with an exception error. Install was done locally (copied down all install files to c:\setup).

Checking the prequisits suceeds, when install starts with first step "Configuring Distribution server component" I receive a message box "SERVERSETUP.EXE - Program Error" - The application generated a an exception error. Process ID 0xed0 (3792), Thread ID 0xf94 (3988). Click OK to terminate the application or CANCEL to debug.

The Log file created during setup does not help. There is only "Task started", "Root directory" and "Current Directory" listed, nothing more. There are no entries in eventlog.

Please note that the server is 2008 Standard 32bit GERMAN as well as the serversetup.exe, so all messages from above are translated by me from german to english.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Regards

    --Stefan

  • Hi,

    Thanks for the post.

As newly created Auto-approval rules have a different ID which increment from 1 and the old code is looking for the original RuleID of zero, which no longer exists.

Please make the autoapproval configuration changes manually, and for WSUS 3.0 set the sync intervals as well.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hi,

You don't need to install distribution server role from FCS setup if you have WSUS 3.0 because it for WSUS 2.0. Please note that the FCS distrubution role is only properly configured WSUS 2.0 which gives it the ability to sync once an hour and not once a day as it is before this update.
