How to sync a client machine running sql express RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi All,

I am trying to figure out how I can sync a client machine running Windows XP or Windows 7 and running SQL Express 2008 R2.  I want to try and initiate a pull from the client to the publisher (Merge Replication).  I am having an issue trying to figure out how I can use the windows sync manager to accomplish this since the client doesn't have SQL Agent to actually run the sync job.

Is there another way to kick off the pull from the publisher? I had originally wanted to push everything down from a server (publisher), but because of our strict firewall policy, etc I can't seem to establish a remote connection to the clients.

Any information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

  • There is a problem running Windows Synchronization Manager under Windows 7. You will need to open up a support incident with Microsoft to help you to do this.

I normally use Windows Task Scheduler to run a batch file, RMO Code, or ActiveX script.

Now if you can't have the firewall administrator open up port 1433 for inbound communication on the firewall to your publisher you really will be unable to replicate.

If this doesn't work you might want to create a VPN for your subscribers. Microsoft VPN, or OpenVPN are options for this.
