What number does Lync call when a user clicks "Call Voice Mail"? RRS feed

  • Question

  • When I click the "Call Voice Mail" feature on Lync Phone or Lync client, the call is unsuccessful. However, when I call the subscriber access number or the Auto Attendant numbers they all work fine.

Which number does Lync call when a user clicks the Call Voice Mail option from their Lync? the subscriber access number? or is this something that needs to be configured separately?

  • Lync will send out the voice mail call to Exchange Online by placing a call to the user's own number with a special tag. In the SIP log, you will see that the from and the to fields are both they user's SIP address/number, but with a tag.

Calling Voice Mail does not dial the Subscriber Access number; Subscriber Access requires the caller to enter the extension number and the pin, which would defeat the purpose of using the Lync client or Lync Phone to call voice mail.

Make sure that the local machine can see the Edge Server through the required ports (443 TCP and 3478 UDP), as voice mail connections to hosted Exchange Unified Messaging services are routed through your Edge Servers.

  • You can also run a ocslogger trace to se what happens on the Lync FE Server in the Sip stack.

As pininfarina575 wrote, the Exchange Server will be connected directly with a Special tag like

    to : <sip:holger.bunkradt@domain.com;opaque=app:Voicemail>

also check your sip addres on the exchange um, if you have change the sip address, you have to disable/enable the UM for the user

  • Microsoft Lync Server 2010 supports integration with Exchange Unified Messaging (UM) for combining voice messaging and email messaging into a single messaging infrastructure.

For Lync Server Enterprise Voice deployments, Unified Messaging combines voice messaging and email messaging into a single store that is accessible from a telephone or a computer.

To set up voice mail, you can follow the steps in this article.
