Transfer of Files/Folders RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi all, we do not have a domain network. All our user machines/servers(windows 2008 server SP 2) are in the same workgroup.

-All files/folders are on the D drive on server1.  Local users accounts are created on server1. Files/folders are assigned permission to different local users.

-An IP address of server1 has been added to the host.txt file in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc.  Users created shortcut icon to point to the different files/folders or drive mapping to files/folders on server1.

To shut down the server1, we plan to migrate all the local user accounts, files/folders from server1 to server2.  All files/folders will be transferred to an external media.  Permission of files/folders will be transferred as well.

-Server2 will be assigned the same IP address, computer name, workgroup as Server1.  How to backup and restore all the local user accounts together with passwords to server2?

-All the files/folders from external media will be copied to F drive (was D drive on old machine) on server2.  Will all the shortcut icons directing to file/folders and drive mapping on all user machines work correctly?  If the redirecting to files/folders on server2 will be refreshed on user machines much later, how long before the refresh actually take place?

    Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

I do not know of any existing tools on the servers to copy files/folders/users from server1 to server2.  Please direct me or provide more steps, reading material that will help to accomplish the task.

Is it possible to transfer all files/folders to an external media?  Permission of files/folders will be transferred as well?  Copy all files/folders from the external media to server2.  How to migrate all the local user accounts from server1 to server2?

  • You can move all folders and files by using FSMT.
