4/4 Windows Defender Malware Protection Update not available? (CVE-2018-0986) RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have several computers that were updated today for CVE-2018-0986. According to the FAQ in that link the last affected version is 1.1.14600.4. That is what this Windows 7 x64 computer is running. I have tried to manually update in Windows Defender and in Windows Update but both tell me there is no update available. I have rebooted and tried several times. I can see in Wireshark that Windows is successfully contacting the update servers.

Has anyone else received the Malware Protection update for Windows 7? 1.263.1966.0 last received 4/3. Nothing for today though. I have 4/4 update on Windows 8.1 and 10 computers but not this Windows 7 one. I have yet to check other computers running Windows 7.

  • I have since tried on two other Windows 7 computers and the engine version is 1.1.14600.4 (vulnerable) and no update is available in either Windows Defender or Windows Update.

  • I will wait until tomorrow afternoon and if it's still a problem I will report it to swi. Windows Defender on these computers uses KB915597 for updates but that isn't available in the update catalog. I was able to find the latest updates here:

Latest definition updates for Windows Defender Antivirus and other Microsoft antimalware - Windows Defender Security Intelligence

That file mpas-fe.exe is signed 2018-04-04 and contains the latest version of the engine and definitions and it installs properly on Windows 7 computers.

    Client Version:  6.1.7600.16385
    Engine Version: 1.1.14700.5
    Antispyware definitions: 1.265.86.0

However it is still not available automatically. I also tried the "clear the definitions cache and trigger an update" as described on that page. As I mentioned if it isn't available via Windows Update on 2018-04-05 I will report it. Thanks for your help

  • I reported it to SWI earlier today. It seems to have resolved itself this evening. All Windows 7 computers have successfully retrieved 1.265.111.0 which comes with malware protection engine 1.1.14700.5.

    Client Version:  6.1.7600.16385
    Engine Version: 1.1.14700.5
    Antispyware definitions: 1.265.111.0
