How to get Explorer to prompt when moving/renaming/deleting read-only files? RRS feed

  • Hi,
I'm running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit on quad-core notebook with 8GB ram. It seems that Explorer in Windows 7 does not prompt you when you move or rename a read-only file or move a directory containing a read-only file as it did in XP. And when deleting a read-only file, you just get the Recycle Bin prompt, but not the additional read-only prompt.

Does anybody know a way to put back this behavior?  I have several terabytes of permanent files which I keeped marked as read-only, and have always relied on this additional prompt to prevent accidental moves and deletions. (For whatever reason, I tend to be prone to this kind of accident.)

Consequently, since using Windows 7, I keep discovering stuff that I accidentally moved or deleted without knowing at the time, which is very disturbing. This prompting behavior ought to be a configurable option.
