Replace Office 2016 for Mac with Office 365 Subscription RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have Office for Mac 2016 on my MacBook Air. I want to move to Office 365, so I continue to get the latest updates. I already have a subscription to Office 365. How do I migrate from Office for Mac 2016 (perpetual license) and replace it with Office 365 and keep my mail files and settings?

  • Thank you for the update.

I did further test in my testing environment. You can try installing Office for Mac 365 directly which should automatically replace the existing Office 2016 for Mac perpetual license version with the Office 365 version. All your customizations and files should be kept.

  • Hi,

You will need to uninstall the old Office for Mac installation and then install the Office 365 for Mac downloaded from Office 365 portal.

You may also need to run the license removal tool to completely remove all licenses for Office for Mac. This tool can help if you've subscribed to Office 365 but previously had a one-time purchase of Office for Mac on your computer, and aren't seeing certain subscription features. This can be due to your copy of Office still using the license of your one-time purchase and not your subscription. See How to remove Office license files on a Mac for more details.

  • Thanks for the detailed guidance. I'm trying to remove the Office for Mac 2016 perpetual license, but leave behind my mail files, account settings, and other customizations to the Office products. Do you think if I just drag the program files to the trash, then run the license removal tool, but not manually delete the other files, then install Office 365 that it would work?

    Thanks.

  • Steve,

Thank you so much! This worked perfectly. I have the latest Office 365 products on my Mac, they are using my Office 365 subscription, and all emails and settings were preserved.
