Secondary DPM server doesn't detect shares from protected server on Primary DPM RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello Experts,

We have a DPM 2012 SP1 in HQ site, that is protecting :

    • AD (Bare metal & system state)
    • File share ( clustered drives and file shares)
    • Exchange 2013
    • Hyper-V Clusters
    • SharePoint 2013
    • SQL 2012

We have deployed a secondary DPM server in DR site, attached the primary server & now creating protection groups.

I created a protection group for primary DPM components (Database , system state & bare metal).

Now I'm creating the rest of protection groups, but I cannot see file shares from protected servers under the secondary DPM. I can only see drives (c, d ..etc).

I checked TechNet for secondary DPM server,

The following items can be protected from a primary DPM server on which is protection agent is installed and which is configured for protection:

    ◦ The databases in the instance of SQL Server on the primary DPM server
    ◦ All volumes on the primary DPM server (Shares will not be visible separately)
    ◦ All replicas on the primary DPM server.

How can I choose file shares from protected servers?

Also how can I backup all replicas?

    Thanks, Shehatovich

    It's true!

How can I choose file shares from protected servers?

You can protect files ONLY from volume drives from primary DPM.

Also how can I backup all replicas?

You can copy robocopy from primary DPM to secondary.

the use Robocopy to copy the data from the replica to removable storage.

    Basic steps for DPM 2012:

    1) Open a ADMINISTRATIVE command prompt and run dpmbackup -replicas
    2) Run Robocopy and have it copy all the data under the C:\Program Files\Microsoft System Center 2012\DPM\DPM\Volumes\ShadowCopy folder to removable disk

If you have permissions problems then run this script.

    1)      Download psexec.exe from www.sysinternals.com
    2)      Run PSEXEC -s cmd.exe   (this will switch window to system context)
    3)      Afterwards - type WHOAMI it should return:

                      nt authority\system
    4) Run Robocopy.exe and have it copy all the data under the C:\Program Files\Microsoft System Center 2012\DPM\DPM\Volumes\ShadowCopy folder to removable disk.

However, You cannot use DPM to restore files using method C). The restores of protected data will need to be performed manually back to the original server using flat file copy.

    Have a nice day !!!
