Unable to Send/Recive large size attachment to external domain/from external domain RRS feed

  • Question

  • Dear Tech-net Support Team,

Am facing an issue with attachment size in exchange 2010, we are unable to send or receive emails more than 20 MB to outside our domain.
Our current default policy for all mailbox is :- 20MB [Send/Recv]
applied for some users 50MB [Send/Recv].

the user who has 50MB attachment size are unable to send more than 20MB.

    Our email infra like below.
    Exchange 2010 [ Only one exchange ]
McAfee for Exchange [applied to 50 MB Attachment ]
External Email gateway 100 MB Attachment allowed.

    Trouble shoot made:

tracked email for the user, found that status code in exchange "550 5.2.3 RESOLVER.RST.RecipSizeLimit; message too large for this recipient "
Checked mail gateway, the incoming email having more than 20 MB is allowed to our exchange.

Kindly guide to sort out this issue.

  • If all mailboxes' MaxSendSize and MaxReceiveSize are 20MB, then that's your effective limit.

You also have your Transport limits (Get- and Set-TransportConfig), receive connector limits and send connector limits.

Be aware that the message limit is maybe 30% bigger than the maximum attachment size.  That is, a 20MB attachment might add 26MB to the size of a message due to encoding.
