  • Question

  • I want to be able to open up Microsoft Word 2010 and have my letterhead already there. I have the template all set up, but I don't know how to keep the information on the document when I open a new document.

Answers

  • Open your leaderhead template using File > Open and choose Select All > Copy

Next open your Normal.dotm template, by again choosing File > Open and in the file open dialog in the left navigation pane at the top you should see Microsoft > Templates.  Choose that folder and select the Normal.dotm file to open.

From the clipboard choose Paste.  Now you should have on the first page of the Normal.dotm template your letterhead.  Select save and close out of all documents and Word.

Reopen Word and your letterhead should be staring at you.

The "template" you have setup is it saved as a ".dotx" template format or by "template" do you mean you've got the layout of the letterhead all set in a regular "doc" or "docx" file?

I ask because if you have it just in a regular document (doc or docx) format all you need to do is save the file as a template format of dot or dotx. Dotx is the preferred if you want to create docx formatted documents and use all the functions of that document format.

Once you have the template in the proper format you can just save it into your User Templates directory.  An easy way to do this is to open Word and then choose File > Open.  Navigate to your new letterhead template (dot or dotx format) and open it. Then do a Save As adn in the Save As dialog in the left panel on the top you should see Microsoft and a Templates folder below it.  In this Templates folder is where you want to save your letterhead template.

Once saved, whenever you open Word you can choose File > New > My Templates and you'll see your letterhead template.

    Hope this helps

  • Thanks for your help. I've been doing that. I've had the template saved as a .dotx and i've been opening it through New -> Open. What I want to do is to be able to open up Microsoft Word and have the letterhead already staring at me.
