Installing Server 2008 for a table of 10 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Have an opportunity to install and configure Server 2008 for a friend's small office.  I have not done this before (and they know it).  Just curious as to how long it might take to install and configure a server and set up roaming profiles in AD for about 10 users.  They have a workgroup right now with an old XP media center box as the file server.  Server 2008 may be a bit of overkill, but they would like roaming profiles.  They may not need exchange because they have a mail service already.  I would be looking to set up a server, with a NAS box and perhaps a tape backup. Any suggestions or thoughts would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks!

  • Are you installing Windows 2008 server on a new server or existing server?
If you are installing on an existing server check to make sure the hardware is compatible with Windows 2008.
Fresh installation of Server 2008 and drivers, setup the domain, configure DNS, DHCP and setup users will take you a good 4 hours.
Then you will have to join all desktops/notebooks to the domain then setup their roaming profiles.
Then setup your backup if you are using Windows Backup or install any third party backup such as Symantec Backup Exec.
If everything goes well this will be an all day job. If you start to run into hardware or network issues to troubleshoot add another 1/2 day.
