Two users being bombarded by authentication prompts NOT related to Credential Manager

    Question

  • We've got two users in two different branch offices in two different states who are being prompted continuously by Outlook for credentials.  

    If they dismiss the window Outlook retrieves their mail normally.

    The status bar shows "Password Needed"

    If you go to the Send/Receive tab the "key" icon is there to bring back the prompt, clicking the icon does nothing but it disappears from the ribbon.  Subsequently, later on it prompts again or the next time Outlook is open.

    I've tried rebuilding the mail profile and generating a new OST, updating Office, clearing the credential manager, having the user change their domain password, restarting numerous times, and checking connection settings.  And at this point I and my colleagues are at a complete loss as to what might be triggering this prompt.  I would appreciate any assistance on this.

    Does this issue follow the users if they try to login to another working computer?

    Generally, from Outlook client side, we can follow the instructions in the following forum article to troubleshoot the issue:

    Does this issue continue if we switch from cached Exchange mode to online Exchange mode?

  • Talked to the user, and it seems to be limited to his computer.  He can log in from others without issue.

    Changing the cached mode setting doesn't seem to change anything.

    And the settings referenced in the guide you linked were all correct.

    Here's the result of the AutoConfig test.  Sorry it's in XML, but that was the only tab that allowed copying properly.  I've also removed the domain name and replaced it with ***, and replaced references to the user with "user" or "User Name".

  • Thank you for the update.

    Does this issue continue if we try to logon to this computer with a working user account?

    Beside, we can also try creating a new Windows user account on this computer and see if this issue continues.
