Windows XP Professional X64 - Service pack 3 and Cisco linksys RRS feed

  • Question

  • My Cisco wireless router will not install without XP Service Pack 3 or later on my system.  My system has service pack 2 and it appears that with XP64 I should not install Service Pack 3.  I downloaded it anyway and now I can not open it to install it.

  •   XP64 is based on the Windows 2003 x64 code base, so its SPs also match Server 2003.

XP was already at SP1 when server 2003 was released, so SP2 for XP equates the SP 1 for 2003 and XP64, and similarly for SP3/SP2. There was never an SP3 for XP64 for that reason - it was already at the same level as XP x86 SP3 when you installed SP2. If you have downloaded SP3 for Windows XP it will not install in XP64 because it is a 32-bit SP (and you do not need it anyway).

  • Sorry, but Microsoft never developed a Service Pack 3 compatible with Windows XP 64-bit edition.  Many Windows XP users are now Upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7.
