Multiple 'Policy Definitions' folders created in my Central Store

    Question

  • Hi All,

So I have inherited a domain, and it seems that the previous admin created a central store, but there are multiple 'PolicyDefinitions' and 'Policies' folders created all over the place and things just look crazy. I am trying to add the Windows 8 and Server 2k12 .admx files to my 2k8 DCs (of which there are 4 spread across 2 sites) but want clean up this SYSVOL share. If I blow out what's in there now, will kill a whole bunch of GPOs that are already in place? Should I add to the mayhem and pick a new random location to save these to? Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks

  • Hello,

the required folder is mentioned above for the .admx and .adml files.

Other folders below "PolicyDefinitions" are not used from GPMC. In your case I would move all of them out of the folder and only keep above mentioned structure. You should still see in GPMC that "Administrative Templates" shows the connection to the Central Store.

  • Hello,

there could be only ONE "PolicyDefinitions" folder in the path:

%systemroot%\sysvol\domain\policies\PolicyDefinitions for the .admx files and the language files, .adml, below %systemroot%\sysvol\domain\policies\PolicyDefinitions\en-us if you use English language files.

And you should see GUID folders belonging to the existing GPOs.

If you have lots of GUIDs listed in the folder you can compare it with each GPO properties where the GUID is also listed to be sure it is an existing GPO.

  • Thanks Meinolf,

However, within 'PolicyDefinitions' there is another 'PolicyDefinitions' folder. In addition under 'Policies' there is 'PolicyDefinitions' and '_PolicyDefinitions'. Can I assume that '_PolicyDefinitions' was used as a backup by the previous admin? Should that exist?
