move/copy/export VM RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I am playing around with moving vm servers from one storage volume to anotehr.  So far I have tried exporting the VM and copying the files manually across  to a different volume then editing the configuration files.  They both seem to work but the issue i am having is when i try to clean up the old files.  When i try to delete or rename the folder that holds the vm it wont allow me as the configuration file is in use.  I have tried looking for the vmwp.exe to see if a process was locking the file but nothing.  Anyone got any ideas as to what is using this file so i can clean up the files?  Using QSM is not an option here.

Also, this server is part of a shared cluster volume.  The server is being moved to another shared volume that is presented to all the servers in the cluster.

    Thanks

  • Thanks for the reply, yes this is correct but if you are using a CSV cluster and the server is listed in services and applications within failover cluster manager it will not allow you to delete the files.  From what i have tested it seems that you have to delete the server from the Cluster manager to be able to delete the files.  Once this is done you are able to add the server back into the cluster manager.  seems like a messy way of doing it.  Does anyone know of a better way of doing this??

  • Hi,

I just tried to delete the VMs from Failover Cluster Manager console on my Hyper-V machine, I can remove the VMs without any issue.

By the way, you can remove the VHD files manually before you delete it from Failover Cluster Manager console, then you will not need to wait for the “Destroying” time.
