Advantages and disadvantages of Exchange RRS feed

  • Question

  • Currently we are using around 300 email accounts hosted on yahoo. If we implement the Exchange Server2003 we can get so many benifits we know it

    For example

    Advantage

We can route our emails locally which can save the bandwidth in immense amount.

We can backups our emails from a centralized location but in case of Yahoo hosting we cant.

    Disadvantage

In case of disaster/Riots when the office will become shutdown the other countries users will not be able to login the Exchange Server as the office become shutdown.

The UP time yahoo company gives to us that UP time Exchange Server cant gives to our all users World Wide

Kindly give us a brief advantages and disadvantages that why we implement Exchange Server. Because what i feel that the Disadvantages are more than the Advantages.

  • Hi

Implemention of Exchange has many advantages which all cant be listed here.  I suggest you read up on technet.

Although you can route emails locally, you still have to bear in mind the bandwidth that you will require as this may not be what you expect, ie. if the current users are using large attachments via yahoo,  and this is common, this will cause email delays within your Exchange Org.  In addition to deploying Exchange you will need to think about Anti-Virus and Anti-Spam scanning for all your emails too.  Either use a hosted service or you will have to use products such as ForeFront 2010/Antigen.

If you do decide to deploy Exchange then I would consider Exchange 2010 and NOT 2003 as this is near it's end of life.

For backups, you still need to ensure you have a backup/restore procedure in place to recover mailboxes/emails/databases.

You can use Outlook Anywhere and OWA to access emails remotely from your Exchange server if you had to close your office due to riots (providing the server still remains on).  So this would not be a disadvantage if you configure Exchange properly.

Exchange if deployed correctly can give you uptime as with yahoo, This depends on what version you deploy, ie. Exchange 2003 v Exchange 2010.  You can use DAG and have multiple CAS/Hub Servers for HA.

If you're electricity stops, I would suggest that you invest in UPS devices for your server.  This will continut to provide power to server for a period of time until electricity is restored or the generators kick in.  This will depend on how quick your generators start and how long they can produce power for until electricity is restored.

Alternatively, you can consider deploying a mixture of on premise/hosted Exchange deployment in a datacenter whch will gurantee you will have electricity.

Hub servers are transport server, this is a new role in Exchange 2007/2010.  Was not around in 2003.

We are in a country where electricity usually disconnect and we have to start the generators. (in case of office close how can we start generators and how can we UP our exchange got it !!!). So this is also a big problem for us which keeps stopping us in implementing the Exchange

  • Hi
Exchange offers many functions which yahoo doesn’t offer it to you. But I don’t know whether they are benefit to you. Your company isn’t safe. So it will cause many problems. You can invest UPS or set up exchange system in 3 rd database center.
You can list function which you need and contact with sales of Microsoft in your country. They can give you free product introduction. It can help you to know about new feature of exchange system.
