Mom 2005 agent on Windows 2008 x64/SQL 2008 x64 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am testing MOM 2005 monitoring Sharepoint (MOSS 2007). Specifically I have SQL 2008 MP questions. MOM DB and MS is on Windows 2003 32-bit. The agents are on Windows 2008 64-bit running SQL 2008 64-bit.
The bottom line is I am getting no alerts from the SQL rules. The mp is Microsoft_SQL_Server_2008_MP_10.0.0001.0000.akm

Anyone  had success with SQL 2008 MP on 64-bit environment. The latest MP guide "SQL Server 2008 MP Guide for MOM 2005 Final.doc". Does not include much in the way of SQL 2008-specific instructions. First question... Should this MP include and install SQL 2008 specific views in the Operators Console? My Ops Console show SQL 2000 and SQL 2005 views, but no SQL 2008 views. Is this normal? I've tried importing the MP as a update to a previously installed SQL MP; also on a different test server, I installed it stand-alone. In both cases, no new views were added for SQL 2008. Next question, is the SQL 2008 MP for MOM 2005 supported on 64-bit SQL?, Has anoyone had luck monitoring 64-bit SQL 2008 with the MOM 2005 agent? I have not beean able to trigger any alerts. Even though I can get alerts from some of the other MPs on the same agent. Other MPS are Windows baseline 2008, Failover clustering, WSS3 Sharepoint server, Office Sharepoint server.
I have followed all the security steps outlined in the MP guide, although they are not 2008 Mgmt Studio-centric. I have several other SQL servers on the priduction environmet monitored with MOM so I feel I know how to make it work.

Thanks for any help you can provide...

  • Are you running a 64bit MOM agent on the servers? There is a good article pertaining to known issues with the MOM 2005 agent interop with 32bit & 64bit environments.

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/903847

Basically, alot of the functionality comes down to whether or not the application you are monitoroing provides 32bit perf counters, event messages (etc) with thier 64bit version...

  • Thanks Tom.  I have read that kb which made me think it was supported enough to work (mostly). I guess I'll have to keep working on it. I'm still looking for a comment on whether SQL 2008 views are supplied by that MP.

  • I think the SCOM SQL 2008 MP's dont' come with Views, from what I've ready on the forums.
