Dual Seperate DPM Servers - Agent question RRS feed

  • Question

  • We are in progress of migrating our DPM environment to a shared library using DPM on 2012R2 OS servers.

Our Server1 is 2008R2 with DPM 2012R2 with agents on all our systems.  It is connected to our older tape library

Our Server 2 is 2012R2 with DPM 2012R2 connected to our new Fiber library.

Q: Can I dual home agents and if so how?

Q: If can't dual home agents how do I move agents to the new DPM server w/o uninstalling and needing to reboot server?  What about the backup history?

After Server2 is up and running backups we will upgrade Server 1 to 2012R2 and setup a shared library infrastructure.

  • Hi,

Q1. DPM-agents can only be connected to one DPM-server unless you are using scale-out protection.
(Scale out protection for virtual machines)

Q2. Verify that your DPM-servers are running the same version(Open DPM-console and press the About DPM buttton).

    1. Stop the protection on Server1(choose to retain the data to keep your backup history)
    2. In the DPM-console -> Management -> Agents. Right click each server that shall be moved and choose "Disable protection".
    3. Now go to the protected servers and re-point the DPM agent to the new DPM server. Here is how you can set the agent to the new DPM server: Open an elevated command prompt and navigate to %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\DPM\bin once you are in this directory run the command:
      SetDpmServer.exe -dpmServerName DPMSERVER2-NAME.
    4. Go to Server 2, open the DPM-console -> Management -> Agents and choose Install and then Attach agents.

Your DPM-agents are now configured for Server2 and you can start to configure protection for the agents.

I hope this will help you in the migration process!

    Kind Regards
    Markus Eliasson
